WHY LEDs?

In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb, and it remains essentially unchanged today, meaning that a bulb developed by Edison in the 19th century would fit into a 21st century socket and work.

It’s now time to move into a more Green approach to lighting solutions and improve upon the light bulb. LEDs are Light-Emiting Diodes. They are expected to be the future of illumination. The LED lasts, on average, 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb and requires about 80% less electricity to produce the same amount of light. There is no filament to burn out and most LEDs are not hot to the touch like a normal light bulb.

WHAT ARE LEDs?
LEDs are microchips which essentially manipulate electrons to produce light. Most people are probably familiar with LEDs as the glowing red indicator on an answering machine to alert them to messages. Today, LEDs are used in a growing variety of applications such as:
  • traffic lights
  • flashlights
  • automobile taillights

They can also be used in stage lights to illuminate the actors and scenery, in restaurants, department stores, and on bridges. They have been used in Christmas and other decorative indoor or outdoor lighting as well as numerous other applications.

There is just one drawback.... Once you discover LED lighting, you’ll probably find yourself looking for LEDs everywhere.
